I liked it more than the rift, but definitely less than the search。 I'd say its about on par with the promise。 I would probably give it a three, but I'm keeping in mind that this was made for a younger audience, I think it deserves a four。 It felt pretty predictable。 I also just felt like they focused on the wrong things in the plot。 There were so many more interesting paths they could've explored, but I felt like they just chose the easier one。 I did like it though。 I liked it more than the rift, but definitely less than the search。 I'd say its about on par with the promise。 I would probably give it a three, but I'm keeping in mind that this was made for a younger audience, I think it deserves a four。 It felt pretty predictable。 I also just felt like they focused on the wrong things in the plot。 There were so many more interesting paths they could've explored, but I felt like they just chose the easier one。 I did like it though。 。。。more

“As parents, we want nothing more than for our children to be safe。 Unfortunately, this world is an inherently unsafe place, so many dangers, so much to fear。 No matter how hard we can try, we can never keep our children completely safe。 Better to teach them - and ourselves - to see the fear with unclouded eyes… the fear will always be with you。 Always… you must learn to see it with unclouded eyes”

4。5 starsSmoke & Shadow was my favorite of the Avatar: The Last Airbender graphic novel series so far! The three-part novel almost exclusively focuses on Zuko and his family。 It actually seems to continue the story from The Search, despite The Rift being placed in between the two。Unlike the previous installments where I picked up the three individual parts from the library, I actually bought this hardback collection (aka the "library edition")。 I think this really amplified this experience。 It m 4。5 starsSmoke & Shadow was my favorite of the Avatar: The Last Airbender graphic novel series so far!

Out of the three Avatar graphic novels that I have read so far, this one is by far my favorite。 I loved how this book really emphasized what was going on in the Fire Nation, and some of my favorite characters in the show are rather prominent in the story。 I loved the story and the mystery surrounding the conflict of the book, and of COURSE the artwork continued to blow me away。 I loved the dark tone of this story, the other avatar comics are usually much lighter in nature, so I enjoyed this slig Out of the three Avatar graphic novels that I have read so far, this one is by far my favorite。 I loved how this book really emphasized what was going on in the Fire Nation, and some of my favorite characters in the show are rather prominent in the story。 I loved the story and the mystery surrounding the conflict of the book, and of COURSE the artwork continued to blow me away。 I loved the dark tone of this story, the other avatar comics are usually much lighter in nature, so I enjoyed this slightly different mood。I loved seeing Mai and Zuko interact in this book, especially with Kei Lo in the mix。 I really like Kei Lo, I thought he was rather spunky and I'm glad that he turned himself around and decided to change his ways so he wouldn't hurt Mai。 Though I definitely ship Mai with Zuko, (view spoiler)[ and even though Mai and Kei Lo break up in the end, (hide spoiler)] I still thought that Mai and Kei Lo's relationship was cute and fun to read。 It was nice to see Mai laugh and smile with someone。 Continuing on with Mai, I thought it was so cute that her and Tom-Tom's relationship had grown so much since season 2。 She was so distant to him in the show, and it melted my heart seeing that their bond had strengthened since then。 They were such a cute duo, and although they weren't together that often, I still loved them。(Spoilers in the next paragraph)I really liked seeing Azula back in this story, and although she clearly isn't any closer to redeeming herself than she was in "The Search," it was nice to see that she was mentally better。 She clearly had let go of the desire to become fire lord, and she had come to peace with her mother, so she was no longer having hallucinations of her。 I thought the whole rouse that Azula was doing was interesting, and although I don't fully understand what she was specifically trying to achieve with kidnapping all the children。 Even though I don't get quite what she was doing, I do think that the reveal of her was oddly chilling。 Just seeing the spark of lightning from her fingers made chills run down my spine, and I was not entirely expecting her to be in this book at all。In my review of "The Search" I briefly talked about how much I love Kiyi, and I want to talk about her character some more。 Between the two books she has gone through so much。 She has to move from the home she's always known, her mother changes faces, she finds out she has two siblings (one of which tries to destroy their house), and she gets kidnapped。 I love how feisty she is, and love the sweet relationships she has with her parents and Zuko。 I'm glad that she was able to (view spoiler)[ learn to trust her mother again (hide spoiler)] and I'm also glad that the creators decided to let her (view spoiler)[ be able to firebend。 (hide spoiler)] The scene where she did that was so badass and it made we want to scream with excitement。The only complaints with this book is that I don't fully understand the intentions of every single one of the characters。 As I mentioned earlier, I didn't quite understand any of the intentions of Azula or her little posse at all。 Also, at the end of the book Zuko made a big speech to some of the fire nation citizens apologizing with how he handled that fiasco and that he would try harder in the future to do better。 Personally, while I was reading it, I didn't really get what he was doing that was supposed to be wrong, and I don't know what specifically it was that motivated him to make such a large apology。I loved this book so much, and I can't wait to read more of the Avatar comics in the future! I love this book so much; from the premise, to the mystery, the characters, to the conflicts, and the art, to the atmosphere。 It was beautiful and I could not have asked for anything better。 I enjoyed how the book concluded (I especially enjoyed seeing Ursa lose her fear of Ozai and treat him how he deserves) and although I wish we could see a redemption arc for Azula one day, for everyone else it ended nicely。 Honestly, I wish every single one of the comics could have focused on the fire nation and the fire nation characters that I love so dearly。 。。。more

Kiddos still love these comics, but in my opinion they are consistently failing to live up the magic of the series。 One problem is that the Avatar does not feature prominently enough, despite being in the center of all of the covers。 On the plus side, the comics do feature difficult themes that make good discussion starters--this one, for example, had an armed citizens brigade that tried to usurp power。

There were some major issues with the villain(s?) plan, and teenage romance is never not awkward, but it's Avatar so I refuse to give less than four stars。 There were some major issues with the villain(s?) plan, and teenage romance is never not awkward, but it's Avatar so I refuse to give less than four stars。 。。。more

Weakest of the continuation comics so far。 It’s not terrible, but the action is a lot less interesting and too much time is spent on ships that I really couldn’t bring myself to care for。

Another enjoyable installment in the Avatar collection。

Yet another phenomenal addition to the avatarverse。 There was a love triangle I didn’t care for all that much, but everything else was on par with the rest of the series。 This graphic novel focuses on fire nation business, and a mysterious spirit that takes children- what’s not to love?

Zuko's little sister (no, not that one) is adorable and it's so cute seeing him be just the best big brother。 Also Ursa finally confronting Ozai was just 👌🏻👌🏻👌🏻 destroy his ego sis。However, pls stop making me read about love triangles。 I did my time watching the Korra-Mako-Asami saga。 Zuko's little sister (no, not that one) is adorable and it's so cute seeing him be just the best big brother。 Also Ursa finally confronting Ozai was just 👌🏻👌🏻👌🏻 destroy his ego sis。However, pls stop making me read about love triangles。 I did my time watching the Korra-Mako-Asami saga。 。。。more

My favorite of the comics so far。 This comic is artistically beautiful, exciting, and caught me surprised by the twists and turns in the plot。 This comic also centers Mai, who I think is one of the most criminally underrated characters of the franchise。 This is wonderfully written and explores a lot of complex issues with poise。 I enjoyed it so much that I immediately bought the next two comics to find out what happens next。

This one was actually really good。 I really liked it。

These books make me so happy。 I always end up wishing that I could be watching the story instead, having the show continue on with what happened after defeating the corrupt Fire Lord。 There isn't much Sokka or Katara in this one and no Toph。 It's a Zuko heavy plot, which are very entertaining and stressful。 (view spoiler)[Azula comes back in the best way possible, making trouble for everyone else。 I love this character so much and am happy she's not on a redemption arc。 She was born to be bad an These books make me so happy。 I always end up wishing that I could be watching the story instead, having the show continue on with what happened after defeating the corrupt Fire Lord。 There isn't much Sokka or Katara in this one and no Toph。 It's a Zuko heavy plot, which are very entertaining and stressful。 (view spoiler)[Azula comes back in the best way possible, making trouble for everyone else。 I love this character so much and am happy she's not on a redemption arc。 She was born to be bad and should stay that way。 (hide spoiler)] 。。。more

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 I am so pissed。 I was expecting a new villain but oh no, they're using Azula again for the millionth time。 This might be the laziest villain reveal I've ever read。 It just doesn't add up especially what Azula has went through on the previous book - The Search。I am also pissed on Ozai tantrum, why would he be affected on his former wife's words? We already knew that he doesn't care。 So why? I really wanted the rating a 2。5 out of 5 stars, but I don't think I can here。 I am so pissed。 I was expecting a new villain but oh no, they're using Azula again for the millionth time。 This might be the laziest villain reveal I've ever read。 It just doesn't add up especially what Azula has went through on the previous book - The Search。I am also pissed on Ozai tantrum, why would he be affected on his former wife's words?
